Ursula Rucker - Untitled Flow (Kenny Dope & Franck Roger Remixes)
One of 2007’s biggest underground tracks – Ursula Rucker’s spoken-word ‘Untitled Flow’ – returns in 2008 with fresh new remixes from two of the scene’s hottest names. The one and only Kenny Dope and French House mainstay Franck Roger turn in brilliant remixes of the original Vega Records release, ensuring Ursula Rucker’s socially-aware thoughts continue to move bodies in clubs worldwide.
The Philadelphia-based Rucker has long been revered for her socially-charged, at times aggressive spoken-word lyrics. Her three studio albums, including the latest - 2006’s Ma’at Mama - have drawn plaudits from across the globe and reinforced her reputation as a straight-shooting artist who tells it like she sees it.
Mixing hip-hop flavours with funk, heavy beats with deep bass, Rucker’s heartfelt observations on life and the state of our world have see her work alongside Mos Def, Macy Gray, Gil Scott-Heron and even Nina Simone. Now, with ‘Untitled Flow’ receiving a new lease of life on Vega Records courtesy of Kenny Dope and Franck Roger, her star is set to rise further as she continues to ‘deal with the real issues’.
Kenny Dope’s remix is, as you’d expect, expertly-produced and features an acid-tinge which maximizes Rucker’s strong vocals, while Franck Roger’s remix is a darker, more moodier, tech-edged affair with more of the classic French flavour that we’ve all come to expect from the European master. Put simply, these are two producers at the top of their game, and each bring to the table their own unique slant on the original mix, produced with love last year by Italian producer Mario Pagliari.
Indeed, Louie Vega’s Masters At Work partner Kenny Dope proves he is getting better with each release with his remix of ‘Untitled Flow’. In between DJing worldwide on a weekly basis, he continues to show the younger generation how’s it’s done, evolving as an artist after more than two decades on the international scene.
Franck Roger meanwhile has been at the forefront of the Parisian deep-house scene since the mid 1990s. In addition to releasing original productions and remixes on his own Real Tone Records, Earthstrumental Music, Franck Roger Digital and Franck Roger Production imprints, he has also dropped acclaimed cuts on BBE, Defected, Shack, Innervisions, City Deep, Slip ‘n’ Slide, Kenlou, Seasons and many more. His club night – The 5 Beats – similarly continues to draw some of the finest DJs in the world at its home at Djoon in downtown Paris, in addition to one-off events in New York and London.
Like a bottle of wine – ‘that expensive shit’ - Vega Records continues to get better with age and maintains its position at the forefront of the global house movement. Get your hands on Ursula Rucker’s ‘Untitled Flow – the Kenny Dope and Franck Roger remixes – out on Vega Records!
