Oumou Sangare was born 1968 in Bamaka; following a tough upbringing she rose to become an iconic Malian wassoulou musician. Wassoulou is descended from traditional hunting songs, hypnotically rhythmic home-grown music that has become her trademark. Many of Sangare's songs concern love and marriage, especially freedom of choice in marriage. Her Moussoulou album was an unprecedented West African hit. Oumou’s lyrics talk about the concerns of everyday life in contemporary Mali, especially the problems that women face on a daily basis. Her songs talk openly about a diverse range of subjects that previously would have been considered taboo in West African society, such as songs about female sensuality or the problems of polygamy. ‘Te Diya Bee Ye’ is taken from her ‘Oumou’ album, released back in 2003. Jose Marquez had always been a fan of Oumou’s work and thought he could create something really special with the track and set about making an edit to play on his dance floors. The remix caught the attention of Tribe records and the purveyors of the deep house industry. Los Angeles DJ/Producer Jose Marquez’s musical influence is a result of being brought up on a stable diet of Latin and world music. Always intrigued by electronic dance music, Jose's mission has been to fuse his love of world music with the dance floor. He has indeed succeeded in his quest by creating club bangers such as the remix of Celia Cruz ‘Elegua’, Nina Simone ‘Black Bird’, and has recently been busy remixing for Tribe Records including Zepherin Saint’s deep house hit ‘Midnight Mawal’ and Black Motions Banane Maboko. Jose best describes his sound as a fusion of deep afro-Latin soul and percussive dance floor rhythms.
