DJ Tony Lebron?s love of music developed at an early age, as he listened to his mother?s Latin music collection at home and to local DJs pulling hits from crate after crate of vinyl at neighborhood parties. More than that, he is of that generation that witnessed the birth of rap/hiphop?and at 16, he began to DJ for friends and for-hire. In 1986, Tony discovered the NY club scene, including these legendary hotspots like The Tunnel, HeartThrobs, 1018, Sound Factory, Octagon, Roseland & Studio 54. It was at this time that Tony began promoting for the NYC Underground Club in Union Square, where he was influenced by DJs such as Jose ?The Animal? Diaz, Roman Ricardo, Louie Vega, Baby J, Eric B and many others who contributed to the melting pot of Tony?s musical influences.
In 1986, a neighbor and avid clubgoer brought him to a downtown Manhattan nightspot called Lazarra?s. Though not old enough to frequent the club as a patron, he was put on to DJ that night and thus began his professional DJ career. Shortly thereafter, Tony began to show interest in the production aspect of the industry. As a result, he was introduced to Danny Miranda, the head sound engineer at the Platinum Factory in Restoration Plaza, Brooklyn. Danny was entrenched in producing freestyle tracks and began to teach Tony the craft of production. Though continuing to network throughout the industry, Tony chose to place his pursuit of music on the shelf to seek a career in law enforcement, politics and the advocacy of civil rights for Latinos and African-Americans in New York City; this does not mean, however, that Tony ever lost his love for music!
After an almost 17-year hiatus, in mid-2007, he was approached by veteran hip-hop and former Fugees member, DJ Hard Hittin Harry to assist in the production of an internet radio show. This event marked the beginning of Tony?s return to the music industry. Tony agreed to assist Harry in the production of this weekly show, when Harry suggested that Tony play a one-hour set for one of the shows. Not having been in tune with the dance music industry scene for almost 17 years, Tony reluctantly agreed to deliver an old school house set for the show. Unaware of Tony?s ability to DJ, Harry encouraged him to continue playing. In July of 2007, Tony began searching the Internet for his own Internet radio show. By late July, he stumbled onto www.JerseyDJs.com and landed his first internet radio show, ?Foreplay Fridays.? Realizing he would have to gain a significant amount of exposure to achieve the recognition he desired, he took on two more weekly shows with www.GotBassRadio.com and SoulSatellite.com, a UK based online radio station. In 3 months, Tony was being invited to play as a guest DJ on several other stations by other established DJs. On the strength of his work, he started getting calls to play some local venues in New Jersey and began to network further with the Jersey house community. In January of 2008, Tony ran into his old friend, veteran NYC DJ Ray Vazquez. Tony and Ray began frequenting events together and, in the summer of 2008, Ray invited Tony to play on the Coney Island Boardwalk alongside him and DJ/Producer Duce Martinez for the end of season Coney Island Grand Finale. Tony and Duce developed a solid friendship, which led to Duce inviting Tony to do a guest appearance on his show Axiom Sessions, a syndicated weekly web telecast. Shortly thereafter, Duce began to assist Tony in learning the craft of today?s studio production. DJ/Producer Louie ?Lou? Gorbea (Omi Tutu/Vega Records), an industry veteran, also played a key role schooling Tony in today?s studio production.
Since his return to the DJ scene and production, Tony has been responsible for unreleased remixes such as ?I Can?t Go For That!? (Hall & Oates), ?Blame It On The Alcohol? (Jamie Foxx), ?To The Moon? (Usher) and ?Bad Habits? (Maxwell). Recently, Tony has worked on a remix of ?The Creators? (Jose Gonzales/Luis Romero) along with Duce Martinez. Tony?s has also released solo projects, ?Thunderous Souls, ?Message? with Darryl D?Bonneau and his latest mixes ?Don?t Be Lying? with Emory Toler featuring Remonia Dixon on the Italy based label Twelve Records and Mixes on Scott Jenkins latest release ?Emotional Content? with Scott Jenkins featuring Andy Sax & Shae Lynn. Tony is currently working on other projects for the music industry as well as a remix project with Neo Soul Artist Eric Roberson. Tony has recently launched his own publishing company Spec Ops Media (BMI), indie record label ?L Factor Music? and an apparel line of T-shirts and hats with the trademarked Tony Lebron logo. Stay alert to Tony?s presence in the music industry, as it definitely appears he is here to stay.
